How to Make a Shutter Pumpkin Sign

Pumpkins! Pumpkins! Pumpkins!
 It's pumpkin time, people!

I wanted to make a big sign for Autumn this year and I have lots of old shutters in all sizes. I know so much can be done with them so I put my creative cap on. I wanted a large sign and I have large shutters so I put the two together. At first I was thinking of painting letters on the shutter but I could see problems with that right away..

Then I thought of the beautiful wood letters in Joann's! Perfect. Now for the phrase or word... hmm...
I did a lot of thinking about it and searching the internet. Okay, there are the regular kinds of phrases like give thanks, thankful  (I like those but didn't seem right to have a big sign outside with that) and harvest and harvest time (not fun) and then I thought of just a big sign that says PUMPKINS.  YAY!!

First the shutter was painted with chalk paint and distressed. I had help with that part. Trusty hubs.

At first I thought I was going to paint the letters so I bought the little paints and THEN I saw the pretty orange colored Fall papers in the scrapbooking section of Joann's. LOVE.

I did paint the edges with a pretty orange color as I knew that would not look nice in raw wood. However, I was very excited about getting the letters on the shutter....

I laid the letters on the WRONG side of the paper so the pencil mark wouldn't show and then cut out the letters and glued them on with the Modpodge. I really love that stuff. Hope to make more awesome things with it this Fall.

After it dried a bit I put another 2 layers of Modpodge on. Wow. That stuff dries fast.

Here's my dog, Bunny, with part of the sign. She did not want her picture taken!

Big reveal.

Some other awesome Fall posts for you...

Are you making a bucket list for Fall?

Best wishes for a wonderful Fall season.
