I had this wonderfully thick watercolor paper.
The problem is that when I folded this paper in half, it wasn’t 7 inches square. I could make a nice card but it would be a rectangle not a square. I SO wanted a square so this is what I did.
I cut 7 inches off the long way of the paper. Okay, that sounds not right. Now the paper is 7 inches by 12 inches. Now if you fold it in half the card will be 7 inches by 6 inches. But I wanted a 7 inch square card!!! Then I had an idea. I could still have the front of the card 7 inches and the back of the card could be 5 inches. Five inches is still enough to put greetings on and to hold the card upright when standing. So I tried it and I LOVE the way it came out.
Here are the results:
See how the back of the card is not as wide? But it doesn’t really matter, at least not to me.
So, I started cutting flowers, hearts and butterflies out of paper and felt and sewed them down on my sewing machine. ThenI used Printshop to print out some words, cut them out and sewed those on also.
Mr. Succulent’s card, kinda plain. I could’ve done more with it but I was down to the wire.
See? The card still stands up quite well.
I glued on some buttons to complete the look. I’m sure I could have embellished a lot more but I think this is enough. It’s a clean look, I think.
I bought Mom a pretty serving plate from Home Goods for her dining table.

Hey Linda - thanks for commenting on my blog (and my mural). Yes - absolutely this was way easier than learning the correct way. But as a decorative painter - sometimes you just have to do things quickly because clients don't always want to pay for long, laborious time spent in front of a canvas.
ReplyDeleteLast year I took private lessons in water color. Oh boy - my teacher was tough. No copying from any water color paintings - create your still life from apples, bananas, grapes in a bowl - and just paint it! Very hard for me. Easier to look at someone's artwork - then paint!
